Where It All Began

Our story begins with William Sowerby, who returned from World War I deeply affected by the horrors he had witnessed. With no trade and no clear path forward, he settled in Stourbridge in the Midlands and set out to build something meaningful.

William began by helping injured horses, carefully crafting leather boots to support and protect their damaged legs. His work quickly became known for its care and precision — the same values that define every boot we make today.

Built on Compassion and Grit

At the same time, William helped a local family whose husband had not returned from the war. In an act of determination and compassion, he converted the front room of their home into a small workshop — removing the front window to create a space where he could work — while paying rent that allowed the family to keep their home.

It was a simple idea, born out of difficult times. But it changed lives.

As more injured soldiers returned, William turned his skills to crafting boots for them — each pair made by hand and tailored to their specific needs. Word spread. Demand grew. And a legacy was born.

A Family Business, A Century of Trust

In 1925, the first Sowerby shop opened. What began as one man's effort to help others grew into a family business built on care, resilience, and craftsmanship.
